In a fiery commencement address at the University of Alabama, US President Donald Trump turned his attention to tech billionaires, claiming many who once opposed him are now seeking his favour. “You have to break the system a little bit and follow your own instincts,” Trump told graduates. “If your vision is right, nothing will hold you down.”
Trump remarked, “If you look at some of these internet people, I know so many of them. Elon is so terrific. But I know now all of them. You know, they all hated me in my first term, and now they’re kissing my a**.” He doubled down, saying, “It’s true. All of them.”
Trump’s philosophy of success
Trump used the stage to promote his philosophy of disruption as a pathway to success. “Progress never comes from those satisfied with the failures of a broken system,” he said. “It comes from those who wanna fix the broken system… you’ll make more success by acting that way. The other way may be more secure, but you’ll never go to the top.”
Trump talks of his ‘outsider’ status
Trump also took time to underscore his outsider status, reflecting on his political rise. “There was never a businessman that won a presidential election,” he said. “Out of 100%, 8% were generals and 92% were politicians. Not even admirals. Just generals.” The remarks seemed aimed at encouraging students to defy conventional paths and challenge the establishment.
Trump’s speech draws criticism
The speech immediately sparked controversy on social media. Critics were quick to call out Trump’s remarks. One user posted, “This guy has no decency,” while another wrote, “Elon sucks. H1B visas. Anti-Americans.” A third user mocked, “Very presidential of him,” and another warned, “Oh Donald, you’ll regret those words.”
Trump vs Musk?
Tensions between Trump and Elon Musk have simmered for years. In 2022, Musk tweeted that Trump was “too old to run again” and should “hang up his hat & sail into the sunset.” While clarifying that he didn’t “hate the man,” Musk urged Democrats not to attack Trump, warning it might push him to return. Trump, in response, claimed Musk once “would have gotten on his knees and begged” for help during a White House visit.
