Pakistan has officially nominated US President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, praising his role in defusing the recent military escalation with India. The announcement was first reported by The Dawn, which quoted an official government statement commending Trump’s “decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership” in calming tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

The conflict started after the Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, striking terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The attack was conducted in retaliation for the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 civilians were killed, including a Nepali national. In a counterattack, Pakistan initiated Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, terming it as a ‘’measured and precise’’ military response to defend its sovereignty without harming civilians.

Trump credited for averting war

As per a government post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Trump played an important role in defusing the situation. The statement read, ‘’at a moment of heightened regional turbulence’’, Trump showed ‘’strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship’’ by engaging both Islamabad and New Delhi in direct diplomatic outreach.

His efforts, the post continued, assisted “secure a ceasefire and avert a broader conflict between the two nuclear states, and that would have had catastrophic consequences.’’ Pakistani officials have described the US President’s mediation as ‘’a testament to his role as a genuine peacemaker.’’

The ceasefire was reportedly finalised during a call between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries, with Pakistan initiating the proposal. However, Indian DGMO Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai later mentioned that Pakistan violated the truce within hours through drone invasions and cross-border firing.

Despite the breakdown, Islamabad holds that Trump’s intervention was crucial. “Durable peace in South Asia will remain elusive,” the statement added, ‘’until the UN Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir are implemented.
