At least 12 people were killed and 13 others were injured after a powerful car bomb exploded outside a district court in Islamabad on Tuesday, local media reported. Most of the casualties were passersby or individuals who had come to the court complex for scheduled hearings. The blast, which was heard several miles away, also destroyed multiple vehicles parked outside the courthouse. The area typically sees hundreds of visitors each day.

A senior Islamabad police official confirmed the death toll to Pakistani newspaper Dawn. Two security officials confirmed to The Associated Press that the explosion was caused by a car bomb. No group has claimed responsibility so far.

Pakistan continues to face persistent security challenges, including attacks linked to the resurgent Pakistani Taliban. Earlier on Tuesday, security forces said they had foiled an attempted assault on an army-run cadet college in Wana, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
