Thousands of banking app users in the UK have reported difficulties accessing their accounts due to technical issues, according to a report by BBC.

According to Downdetector, a platform outage monitor, reports of problems with the Lloyds Bank app surged to over 4,000 on Friday morning. Users also experienced disruptions with the Halifax, TSB, and Bank of Scotland banking apps. Halifax and Bank of Scotland are part of the Lloyds Banking Group.

A spokesperson for Lloyds Banking Group acknowledged the issue, telling the BBC, “We know some customers are having issues with internet banking and our apps. We’re sorry about this and we’re working to have it back to normal soon.”

Frustrated customers took to social media to share screenshots of error messages when attempting to access the Lloyds app. The outage has caused particular inconvenience as it falls on payday for many in the UK, the report mentioned.

One user informed the bank’s social media team on X that they were unable to access their business account to pay their staff. Another, who had been advised to transfer funds into their account, said they couldn’t do so because of the app’s malfunction. “Your new cards have no phone numbers on, and I’m nowhere near a branch,” they wrote, adding, “help!”

This disruption follows a similar incident in January, when Barclays’ mobile banking services went down on payday, leaving customers unable to make essential transactions for days.

In response to ongoing concerns about banking IT failures, the Treasury Committee has written to the leaders of nine major banks, requesting details on the extent and impact of such outages.
