Hours after the sudden resignation of Angela Rayner as UK’s Deputy PM, David Lammy was appointed as the new deputy prime minister, according to BBC. In a sweeping cabinet reshuffle by Keir Starmer, Lammy, a senior Labour figure, has also been assigned the role of justice secretary. In further changes, Yvette Cooper has been named foreign secretary, while Shabana Mahmood will replace Cooper as home secretary, the BBC report further stated.

The shake-up came soon after Rayner stepped down as deputy prime minister, housing secretary and deputy leader of the Labour Party. Her resignation followed revelations that she had underpaid stamp duty on her £800,000 flat.

Rayner, MP for Ashton-under-Lyne, admitted earlier this week that she had failed to pay the full amount of tax on the property and referred herself to the prime minister’s ethics adviser.
