In a stern response to Pakistan, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar delivered a scathing rebuke, asserting that Islamabad’s strategy of cross-border terrorism will never succeed and that the country should not expect to act with impunity. Speaking at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Jaishankar emphasised that actions will have consequences, firmly outlining India’s stance on the matter.
India has consistently raised concerns over Pakistan’s backing of cross-border terrorism and has maintained that terrorism and diplomacy cannot coexist. Jaishankar reiterated that the fundamental issue between the two nations is the vacating of illegally occupied Indian territory by Pakistan and the abandonment of its longstanding involvement in terrorism.
The External Affairs Minister highlighted the global menace of terrorism, asserting that all its forms must be staunchly opposed. He emphasised that the United Nations must not hinder the sanctioning of global terrorists for political reasons. Jaishankar did not shy away from directly condemning Pakistan, equating its GDP with radicalization and its exports with terrorism.
Moreover, Jaishankar criticised Pakistan for its history of using terrorism as a tool against its neighbours, citing grave incidents such as the 2008 Mumbai attacks and the 2001 assault on the Indian Parliament. He underscored Pakistan’s malicious intent and actions, urging the international community to expose and counter such behaviour.
In response to Pakistan’s recent statements at the UNGA, including demands for the reversal of Article 370 and calls for dialogue, India remained steadfast in emphasising the need for Pakistan to refrain from aggression and to actively combat terrorism to foster an environment conducive to peaceful dialogue. India’s stance remains resolute in seeking normal bilateral relations with Pakistan, contingent upon Pakistan’s commitment to eradicating terrorism and hostility.
Jaishankar further emphasised the urgency for the international community to address ongoing conflicts such as the war in Ukraine and the Gaza conflict. Stressing the correlation between peace and development, Jaishankar urged timely resolutions to conflicts and cautioned against a complacent approach towards continued large-scale violence.
India’s firm response to Pakistan’s support for cross-border terrorism affirms its unwavering commitment to combatting terrorism and upholding international peace and security. The country’s resolute stand at the UN General Assembly sends a clear message that it will not tolerate threats to its sovereignty and will take the necessary steps to address such challenges.
By underscoring the need for urgent solutions to conflicts and advocating for global security and stability, India’s External Affairs Minister highlighted the imperative of collective action by the international community. As nations navigate complex geopolitical dynamics, the call for adherence to principles of international law and the promotion of peace remains paramount in fostering a harmonious global order.
