The Iranian-backed Houthis said Saturday that an Israeli airstrike in Yemen’s capital Sanaa killed Ahmed al-Rahawi, the prime minister of the rebel-run government, along with several ministers in a strike carried out Thursday.

The Israeli military said Thursday it had “precisely struck a Houthi terrorist regime military target” in the Sanaa area of Yemen. According to the Houthis, Prime Minister Ahmed al-Rahawi, who had led the rebel-run government since August 2024, was among those killed while attending a workshop to review the administration’s performance.

The Houthis have launched repeated missile attacks on Israel since the Gaza war began, framing them as acts of solidarity with Palestinians. Most projectiles have been intercepted or broken up mid-air, but the group has continued its campaign. Earlier this week, Israeli strikes on Sanaa killed at least 10 people and injured more than 100, Houthi officials said.
