Musk vs Trump: Elon Musk, billionaire entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has formally launched a new political entity called the America Party, declaring it a response to what he termed the “uniparty” system in the United States. The announcement, made via his social media platform X, follows a widely shared poll in which over 65% of 1.25 million respondents said they supported the idea of a new party.

“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk declared. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.” His sharp criticism of the current two-party structure accused both Republicans and Democrats of contributing equally to America’s growing fiscal crisis. “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” he added.

Fallout with Trump and Big Beautiful Bill

Musk’s move comes just one day after US President Donald Trump signed Big Beautiful Bill into law, a bill Musk had publicly and vehemently opposed. Once a major donor and appointee within Trump’s second administration, Musk has now broken ranks dramatically.

He accused Trump’s bill of exploding the federal deficit to a staggering $2.5 trillion. “This will bankrupt the country,” Musk posted in response to a user asking what caused the shift in his support for Trump.

Musk’s entry into politics and ‘Battle of Leuctra’

Rather than launching a full-scale campaign across the country, Musk suggested a strategic approach: “One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts.” Given the razor-thin legislative margins in Congress, highlighted by the House’s 218–214 vote and a 50–50 tie in the Senate, Musk’s party could aim to act as a power broker on divisive legislation.

Musk promoted the America Party as a vehicle to disrupt the “uniparty” and end the bipartisan control that has dominated US politics for over 160 years. He likened his approach to ancient military tactics, referencing the ‘Battle of Leuctra’ where the outnumbered Thebans defeated Sparta through concentrated force: “Extremely concentrated force at a precise location on the battlefield.”

He has hinted that the America Party will contest select seats in the 2026 midterm elections. While he has not named candidates or districts, the plan is to shape Congress by holding the balance of power.

Despite Musk’s immense wealth and influence, breaking the Democratic–Republican duopoly is a formidable challenge. His feud with Trump has already impacted Tesla’s share prices, and Republican strategists are concerned that the rift could harm the party’s 2026 prospects.
