Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney faced sharp questioning on Wednesday at the G7 Summit 2025 over the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. When asked whether the issue was raised with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Carney responded cautiously, stating he must be “careful about further commentary.”

Met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, the Modi-Carney meet came after months of hostility between Justin Trudeau’s government. The long-standing tirade came against New Delhi over the Khalistani terrorist’s murder in 2023.

Standing its ground, India maintained that they had nothing to do with the murder. However, the G7 summit thawed the ice and paved way for the improvement of diplomatic ties between India and Canada. Reiterating the importance of “law enforcement dialogue” Carney shared that there was a judicial process underway.

Responding to the question as to whether the discussion with PM Modi touched upon Nijjar’s murder in Canada. Exercising caution due to the sensitivity of the matter, Carney expressed the need for cooperation.

New Delhi and Ottawa have agreed to reinstate high commissioners in each other’s capitals, marking a significant thaw in diplomatic tensions. The development comes following a “positive and constructive” meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the G7 Summit in Canada.

In a video statement, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasised that the meeting underscored the deep-rooted and multifaceted nature of the India-Canada relationship—built on shared democratic values, respect for the rule of law, and strong people-to-people ties.

This move signals a renewed commitment by both nations to re-engage diplomatically and rebuild trust through dialogue and mutual respect.
