Taking credit for de-escalating the tensions between India and Pakistan, US President Donald Trump on Monday said that he helped bring peace between the two nuclear-armed countries. While speaking at the US-Saudi Arabia Investment Forum, Trump also said he mainly used trade pressure to get both sides to stop attacking each other.
US President says it again :
"I used trade to make a deal between them, and they agreed…” Not only is @realDonaldTrump hyphenating India with Pakistan, he is comparing Prime Minister Modi with Shehbaz Sharif.
Is this comparison acceptable to @PMOIndia ? pic.twitter.com/pCsUxHhvFF— Pawan Khera 🇮🇳 (@Pawankhera) May 13, 2025
Contrary to India’s claims that the ceasefire decision was bilateral and taken after the India-Pak DGMOs spoke, Trump congratulated JD Vance and Marco Rubio from the stage.
‘They are getting along. Maybe we could even get them together a little bit, Marco, where they go out and have a nice dinner together. Wouldn’t that be nice?,’ he later commented.
Followed by laughter from many in the audience, including Marco Rubio.
‘We have come a long way he added. Millions of people could’ve died from that conflict that started small but was getting bigger by the day,’ US president further commented.
Just days earlier, Trump said his administration played a key role in securing a ceasefire to stop rising tensions between India and Pakistan. He explained that trade was a major tool in persuading both countries to step back from conflict, encouraging them to focus on economic cooperation instead of military action—an approach that drew applause from the audience.
Trump is in Saudi Arabia on his first leg of a four-day trip to the Gulf region.
Indian leaders slam Trump for “comparing PM Modi to Shehbaz Sharif”
The Congress on Tuesday firmly criticised US President Donald Trump for once again claiming that his administration was behind the ‘’historic ceasefire’’ between India and Pakistan. The party blamed Trump for not only comparing the two countries but also drawing a parallel between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Sharing a video clip of Trump’s statement, which was made at an investment summit in Saudi Arabia, Congress media head Pawan Khera posted on X, ”US president says it again: ”I used trade to make a deal between them, and they agreed.” Not only is Donald Trump hyphenating India with Pakistan, he is comparing Prime Minister Modi with Shehbaz Sharif.” Khera asked if such a comparison was acceptable to the Prime Minister’s office.
Voicing similar concerns, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram also shared the same video with a sarcastic caption: ”This narrative wasn’t part of the syllabus.” Praveen Chakravarthy, head of the Congress Data Analytics Department, stated, ”Pakistan’s prime minister and India’s prime minister are equal. Pakistan and India are equal powers. Who is saying this? Prime Minister Modi’s ‘good friend’ President Trump”.
