A 62-year-old man drove his car into a crowd of people exercising at a sports center in the Chinese city of Zhuhai on Monday, resulting in 35 fatalities and 43 injuries. The incident occurred while Zhuhai was hosting China’s renowned international air show.

Local police described the incident as a “major vicious incident” stating that it took place around 7:48 pm. on Monday when citizens were exercising at the sports center, where a large crowd had gathered for physical workouts, according to official media reports on Tuesday.

The attacker, identified as Fan, a divorced man, was quickly apprehended by police while attempting to flee the scene. Officers found him in his vehicle, trying to harm himself with a knife. They immediately intervened and took him to the hospital, according to reports.

A preliminary investigation suggests that Fan’s actions were motivated by his dissatisfaction with the property division in his divorce, according to police. Police have filed a case against Fan on suspicion of endangering public safety through dangerous means and have placed him under criminal detention. Investigations are ongoing, and medical treatment for the injured is also in progress.

Fan is currently receiving medical treatment after sustaining severe injuries to his neck and other areas, leaving him unconscious. He is not yet fit to be questioned by the police, according to the local police bureau, as reported by state-run Xinhua news agency.
