Prime Minister Narendra Modi underlined the significance of BRICS as a crucial forum for discussing major global issues. Before heading for a two-day visit to Kazan, Russia for the 16th BRICS Summit, PM Modi stressed India’s commitment to working in alignment with other BRICS countries. BRICS has been considered a beneficial platform for discussing various issues ranging from climate change, economic cooperation, and global issues.
BRICS expansion and its global impact
PM Modi also commented on the impact of BRICS’ expansion and mentioned that the addition of new members has strengthened the group’s inclusivity. The summit in Kazan holds key importance as it’s a chance for non-Western powers to showcase their influence on the ongoing crisis in the Middle East and Ukraine. As per the latest report, PM Modi is expected to engage in bilateral talks with China’s President Xi Jinping and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.
He also expressed confidence that his trip to Kazan will boost the ‘Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership’ between India and Russia. The meeting will also be a follow-up on the talks which were conducted during PM Modi’s visit to Moscow in July 2024. This will be the first meeting since the expansion of BRICS which happened last year in Johannesburg. The Kazan meeting is expected to deal with pressing global issues like mutual economic growth, cultural exchange, and strong supply chains. The new members to join the BRICS block were Egypt, Iran, United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia.
