What are the charges against Sheikh Hasina?
Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina has been charged with multiple crimes, including mass killings over the July-August 2024 uprising in Bangladesh. The mass student-led agitation saw the death of around 1,400 people. It was reported that her government ordered a sweeping security crackdown.
The three accused are all charged with crimes against humanity. The case list crimes under five counts, with the first one alleging the defendants of murder, attempted murder, torture, and other inhumane acts, reported PTI.
Ahead of the verdict, the capital city of Bangladesh, Dhaka has been placed under unprecedented security. Furthermore, amid an already tensed situation, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali on Sunday issued a ‘shoot-at-sight order’ targeting individuals engaged in arson attacks, cocktail explosions or attempts to harm police and civilians ahead of the ICT verdict, the report said.
Hasina’s Awami League had organised a 2-day protest for November 16–17 which coincided with an increase in cocktail explosions and arson incidents throughout the capital, the report added. In the past two days, Dhaka witnessed nine incidents of arson and multiple explosions in areas such as Mirpur, Hatirjheel, Agargaon, New Eskaton, and near the Airport railway station.

Hasina, in an audio message uploaded on her Awami League website, asked her party leaders and activists not to worry about the sentence saying “we have seen enough of these attacks and cases”.

Sheikh Hasina ICT Verdict Live: Hasina reacts to verdicts, says it reveals ‘brazen, murderous intent of extremist figures’
Sheikh Hasina’s detailed statement on the International Crimes Tribunal’s verdicts against her –
The verdicts announced against me have been made by a rigged tribunal established and presided over by an unelected government with no democratic mandate.
They are biased and politically motivated. In their distasteful call for the death penalty, they reveal the brazen and murderous intent of extremist figures within the interim government to remove Bangladesh’s last elected prime minister, and to nullify the Awami League as a political force.
I reject the ICT’s other allegations of human rights abuses as equally unevidenced. I am very proud of my government’s record on human rights and development.
We led Bangladesh to join the International Criminal Court in 2010, gave refuge to hundreds of thousands of Rohingya fleeing persecution in Myanmar, expanded access to electricity and education, and presided over a 450% GDP growth over 15 years, lifting millions out of poverty. These achievements are a matter of historical record. They are not the acts of a leadership unconcerned by human rights. And Dr Yunus and his vengeful cronies can claim no achievements that are remotely comparable.

Sheikh Hasina ICT Verdict Live: About Bangladesh’s ICT, a court created by Hasina
The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) was established in 2010 by ousted PM Hasina’s Awami League government to prosecute people for atrocities committed during Bangladesh’s liberation war in 1971. Later, while the tribunal fulfilled a longstanding national demand for accountability, it soon became one of the country’s most politically divisive institutions.
Over the next decade, the ICT convicted and executed several opposition leaders, mainly from Jamaat-e-Islami and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The execution drew criticism from global rights groups, which accused the tribunal of procedural flaws, rushed trials and selective targeting. Hasina’s government denied the allegations.
Despite the controversies, ICT remained one of Hasina’s most powerful judicial instruments – a court she created, expanded and heavily defended. And today, the same court is pronouncing verdict against her.
After her government was toppled in August 2024, the new interim administration reconstituted the tribunal to investigate the killings and abuses linked to the government crackdown on protesters. In an unprecedented reversal of roles, the court Hasina created just tried her as well as the former home minister and police chief for crimes against humanity.
