Law enforcement authorities have arrested and charged a woman for an incident involving hate-charged, anti-India vandalism in Mississauga, Canada. According to a press release dated October 15, Peel Regional Police’s Hate Crime Unit announced that their investigation had led to them nabbing 29-year-old Freda Looker-Rilloraza. She has since been “charged with Mischief Over $5,000.”

At the time of writing, the woman arrested in connection with hate-related graffiti found near a children’s park in the area had been released on conditions. She has yet to make her appearance in the Ontario Court of Justice.

Anti-India vandalism in Canada

Among a streak of similar cases emerging in Canada, this particular incident took place on September 22, 2025. The Peel law enforcement officials received a report of a controversial graffiti appearing on a telecommunications utility box in the area of Webb Drive and Grand Park Drive. “The spray-painted hate graffiti contained derogatory remarks toward the Muslim and Indian community,” the official press release stated.

Indian-origin councillor in Mississauga, Dipika Damerla, took to her official X account to relay the news of the vandalism suspect’s arrest. “Peel police has arrested Freda Looker-Rilloraza and charged her in connection with Anti Indian Hate Graffiti spray painted on an Alectra Box in Mississauga,” she wrote online a few hours ago.

Merely days ago, an Indian-origin Mississauga resident spoke out against the graffiti directing hate at Indians at a City Council conference, according to a video shared by @905hub_. He went on to ask how the city would be penalising the person responsible for the said incident.

What happened in Mississauga? ‘Indian Rats’ graffiti found in Canada

As previously reported by FinancialExpress.com, the racist graffiti in Mississauga is believed to have been initially spotted by an Indian immigrant. As soon as the issue made contentious headlines in September, India-linked advocacy groups called for immediate investigation.

“We are deeply disturbed by the hateful graffiti discovered next to a children’s Park in Mississauga with the words ‘Indian Rats,'” the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) wrote on X at the time.

“This is not an isolated incident; it is part of a growing pattern of racism, intimidation, and Hinduphobia faced by Indo Canadians and Hindus across the country. The hate is growing more visible but the actions from law enforcement and lawmakers have not kept pace.”

Taking to Reddit, an Indian-origin immigrant detailed having spotted the hate-spewing graffiti next to a children’s park.

Raising several questions, he wrote, “The Canada I chose to immigrate to had a reputation of being a country of the nicest people on God’s green earth. But in my three years of being here, I have had so many incidents of racism that I have lost count…At first I ignored all these incidents as innocent mistakes, or justified it to myself as profiling since so many brown folks work these jobs, but over time I’m starting to realize that it’s racism. It was subtle, but now this? This is right next to a children’s park. What did I even do to not deserve a respectful life here?”
