A fire that erupted early Wednesday in a building housing workers in Mangaf, southern Kuwait, has claimed the lives of at least 41 workers, including several Indians, according to a report.

The building had about 160 employees of the same company living. The incident took place at 6 am in the morning, as per the local time (0300 GMT), as per Major General Eid Rashed Hamad. 

Prime Minister Modi conveyed his heartfelt condolences and shared his profound sorrow over the tragedy. In a tweet on X, PM wrote “The fire mishap in Kuwait City is saddening. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their near and dear ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. The Indian Embassy in Kuwait is closely monitoring the situation and working with the authorities there to assist the affected.”

Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh is urgently traveling to Kuwait to oversee assistance for Indians injured in a devastating fire and to ensure the early repatriation of the mortal remains of those who were killed. Singh is heading to Kuwait under the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

External Affairs Minister, Dr S Jaishankar, took his social media X, formerly Twitter, to express condolences. He wrote, “Deeply shocked by the news of the fire incident in Kuwait city. There are reportedly over 40 deaths and over 50 have been hospitalised. Our Ambassador has gone to the camp. We are awaiting further information. Deepest condolences to the families of those who tragically lost their lives. Wish early and full recovery to those who have been injured. Our Embassy will render the fullest assistance to all concerned in this regard.”


Adarsh Swaika, the Indian Ambassador to Kuwait, visited Farwaniya Hospital in Kuwait City, where several Indian workers injured in Wednesday’s fire incident are receiving treatment.

The officials from Ahmadi Governorate stated that the fire started in a kitchen in the six-storey building in Mangaf area.
