At least 11 people were injured in a shocking stabbing spree at a Walmart store near Traverse City, Michigan, on Saturday evening. As per the authorities, the suspect was arrested shortly after the incident and is now in custody. The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, along with support from Michigan State Police, has taken up the charge of the case.

The attack took place at around 6:00 pm local time and led to a rapid emergency action. Eyewitnesses have shared the panic situation inside the store, with customers running for their safety. The store was sealed off by the police, and police vehicles, fire trucks, and ambulances entered the area to control the situation.

The Michigan State Police’s Sixth District has confirmed the incident on its official X page, stating, “Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office is probing a multiple stabbing incident at the Walmart in Traverse City. The suspect is in custody. Details are limited at this time.”

According to a report by The New York Times, Megan Brown, Chief Communication Officer for Munson Healthcare, said all 11 victims were treated at Munson Medical Centre in Traverse City. She stated that the hospital is still assessing the extent of the injuries but has not shared any other specific details.

In a Facebook post, Grand Traverse 911 has informed residents there was “no ongoing threat” but has appealed to them to avoid going to Walmart and nearby areas as an investigation is currently going on.

Walmart spokesperson Joe Pennigton stated that the company is assisting fully with local authorities, stating, “We are working with law enforcement and refer all questions to them at this time,” as quoted by Associated Press.

Laura Loomer, a Trump ally, claimed that witnesses described the suspect as “a foreign guy” and suggested the attack was likely carried out by an Islamic immigrant. She further alleged that Michigan has been overrun by Islamic influence, describing once-European cities as being overtaken by women in burkas and the smell of shawarma.

In a earlier post, she added, “What are the odds that the person who went on stabbing rampage in Michigan today is a Muslim immigrant? Michigan has been invaded. Deport them all.”

Federal agencies are monitoring the situation

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has commented on the incident, mentioning, ‘’Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence.’’ She also informed that her office is in contact with law enforcement.

FBI Director Dan Bongino also reacted on social media that bureau officials were working to provide any necessary support.’’

Traverse City is situated around 25 miles east of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and is famous for its scenic destination and for its cherry festival.
