The World Happiness Report is released on March 20 marking the International Day of Happiness. Released by the United Nations, US has reached its lowest-ever ranking amidst the rising political isolation from the rest of the world. Finland and other Scandinavian countries re-affirm their position in the top ten spots in the report.

Falling one spot lower, the US ranked at 24 among the 147 countries enlisted in the World Happiness Report displaying a consistent decline when it started at among the top fifteen in 2012. The report highlighted growing unhappiness in the US, noting an increasing preference for eating alone. “In 2023, roughly one in four Americans reported eating all of their meals alone the previous day – an increase of 53 percent since 2003,” the report stated. Making an integral observation, the report also noted that dining alone had become more prevalent across all age groups and specifically among young people.

Measuring social support, income, health, freedom, generosity and the absence of corruption, the United States has shown a consistent decline in its rankings from being at Rank 19 (2019) to Rank 23 in 2024. Researchers suggest that due to rapidly growing political polaritsation in the US administration might be a major contributor to unhappiness with similar trends in Europe.

“Happiness isn’t just about wealth or economic growth – it’s about trust, connection, and knowing people have your back,”  Jon Clifton, CEO of Gallup said in the report. “If we want stronger communities and economies, we must invest in what truly matters: each other.” Social cohesion and a robust social safety net were common characteristics of the highest-ranking countries.

The World Happiness Report underscores the vital role of social connections in overall well-being. As the U.S. experiences a steady decline in happiness rankings, the findings serve as a reminder that economic prosperity alone cannot guarantee fulfillment. With nations like Finland thriving due to strong social bonds and trust, the report highlights the need for policies fostering inclusivity, community engagement, and emotional well-being to build a happier, more resilient society.
