At Berkshire Hathaway’s annual shareholder meeting on Sunday, Warren Buffett, the 94-year-old billionaire investor, provided an unconventional defense of his lifestyle choices, particularly his love for junk food and his aversion to exercise. Seated comfortably with two cans of Coca-Cola and a box of See’s Candies in front of him, Buffett made light of his critics, explaining how his eating habits have not negatively affected his longevity.

“At 94 years of age, I’ve been able to drink whatever I like to drink,” Buffett said, holding up one of the cans of Coke. Despite widespread warnings about the dangers of a soda-heavy diet, Buffett argued that it has not posed a problem for him or his late business partner, Charlie Munger, who lived to the age of 99.

Buffett further joked about his lack of exercise, claiming that neither he nor Munger exercised much, yet they managed to live long lives by focusing on “preserving ourselves carefully.” The remark, delivered with his signature humor, had the audience laughing.

During the meeting, Buffett pointed out the toll that professional athletes’ bodies take from excessive physical activity, suggesting that their wear and tear was a good reason for him not to take up sports. This comment sparked more laughter from the crowd, highlighting his lighthearted approach to aging.

Known for his love of unhealthy foods, Buffett has previously mentioned his penchant for McDonald’s breakfasts, consuming five cans of Coke a day, and indulging in Dairy Queen ice cream. His food choices have become well-known over the years, with hot dogs, fries, popcorn, cookies, and candy being frequent items on his menu.

Buffett’s taste for sugary snacks and fast food has extended beyond personal preferences, as he has made Coca-Cola and Kraft Heinz two of Berkshire Hathaway’s largest holdings. In addition, he has outright bought businesses like See’s Candies and Dairy Queen.

Reflecting on his long life, Buffett emphasized the importance of happiness in determining longevity. “I think happiness makes an enormous amount of difference in terms of longevity,” he said in a 2023 interview. “And I’m happier when I’m drinking Coke or eating hot fudge sundaes or hot dogs.”

Buffett’s casual attitude towards his diet and lifestyle has certainly raised eyebrows over the years, but his continued success and health at 94 suggest that, for him at least, the saying “you are what you eat” may not apply in the traditional sense. While his habits may not be suitable for everyone, Buffett’s infectious optimism and wit continue to make him one of the most admired figures in the business world.
