BJP MP Ravi Kishan sparked discussion on Thursday after demanding a law that would regulate the price and size of food items. The actor-turned-politician used samosas and vada pavs to underscore his point — lamenting before the Lok Sabha that the snack was sized and priced arbitrarily at different locations. The remarks have also prompted some trolling on social media. Many have since taken a swipe at the politician, while others insisted that his analogy was linked to a serious and ongoing problem.
‘There is no uniformity in price, size’
“The standard for the quantity of food served in hotels and eateries across the country should be fixed. The menu card only mentions the price, not the quantity, which causes confusion for customers and leads to food wastage…It is the customer’s right to know how much quantity they are paying for,” he wrote on X while sharing the clip.
Kishan demanded that the government make a law to ensure that restaurant menus detail the “quantity of food items along with the price” as well as information about “the oil or ghee used” to make the dish. He cited popular dishes such as samosas, vada pav and dal tadka — saying that “till date I have not understood” how this works.
“There is no uniformity in the price, quality or quantity of food across hotels, restaurants, or roadside dhabas. Somewhere, even a small samosa is expensive, and at other places, even a large-sized one is cheap,” he told the Lok Sabha.
‘I thought he was joking…’
“I thought he’s cracking some joke but no he is serious. Member of Parliament Ravi Kishan raised the issue of different sizes and materials used in samosas across India with different prices. He says there should be a law to regulate the size and price,” wrote on X user.
“MP Ravi Kishan raised the biggest issue country is facing right now in Parliament. The price and size of samosa. He wants it to be the same whether you buy it from street or five star hotel. Finally someone addressing the real problems in the country,” jibed another.
“The prices of medicines are touching the sky… Inflation is rising, farmers are troubled, unemployment is increasing, the condition of roads is bad. Bridges are collapsing, the roofs of schools and airports are falling. But Ravi Kishan Sahab is worried about the rising price of samosas!” wrote a third.
“People are mocking Ravi Kishan for highlighting the issue of inconsistent food prices across different locations. These are the same individuals who would complain about paying Rs 1,000 for a dosa at an airport. He may not have articulated his intentions clearly, but it’s a serious issue. Listen to his full speech!” countered another social media user.
