Amid criticism of Bengaluru’s pothole and garbage-strewn roads, a resident claimed that it took his kids almost two hours to reach school due to the traffic jam on Sarjapur-Varthur road from Whitefield, which is just 14 km away.

‘Kids took 2 hours to reach school’

Srinivasan Subramani, who is a father of two boys and is a proud Mumbaikar per his bio on X (formerly Twitter), even shared a screenshot from Google Maps which showed the route fully in red – meaning congestion. He also highlighted that even in off-peak hours, the roads are jammed.

“Today our kids took 2 hours to reach school on Sarjapur-Varthur road from Whitefield (14 kms). This is the state of traffic right now (1 pm off-peak hour),” he wrote on X.

He questioned whether anyone was monitoring potholes and traffic on the stretch. The screenshot he shared showed the route mostly in red, indicating heavy congestion, with small sections in yellow and green, but red clearly dominated.

The official X handle of the Bengaluru Traffic Police took cognisance of his post and tagged the Integrated Command and Control Centre of the city.

How do social media users react to this?

“This is totally unfair. Hope the government fixes the infrastructure so the commute time reduces. Please don’t take me wrong – 14 kms of commute for school kids isn’t ideal either. Anything beyond 2-3 kms isn’t worth it for kids, given the stress, commute time, etc,” said one social media user.

Another shared a suggestion for the city’s administration: “Make the city pedestrian-friendly. Not only Bengaluru, but every major city should follow this. Once that happens, everything else will fall into place like a chain reaction. No more street vendors blocking walkways; they can be given proper designated spaces with parking facilities. No more encroachment by shops.”

“I woke up early today, and left for the office at 6.50, feeling very happy about it that I’ll be able to beat the traffic. Got stuck at Vibgyor Road for 30 minutes. I’ve heard it gets worse before it becomes better, but I have lost all hope. The city is beyond repair,” a third shared.
