In a shocking case of alleged identity theft, a farmer hailing from Uttar Pradesh‘s Mathura has claimed that he received a Rs 30 crore Income Tax notice because of fraudulent misuse of his PAN card. Saurabh Kumar, who is a resident of Damodpura village in the Aurangabad area, stated that he was shocked to know that multiple fake companies had been registered under his name without his knowledge.

On being asked by a reporter of Bharat Samachar to explain the matter, Kumar stated, “On March 26, I got a call from the post office saying I had received a letter. When I went outside and checked, I saw it was an income tax notice of Rs 30 crore. I have never seen Rs 30 crore in my life and I have received a Rs 30 crore notice.” He further added that  he had no idea that his PAN card was misused until he received the notice.

Farmer received Income Tax notice for the second time

Surprisingly, this is not the first time Kumar has experienced such a situation. In 2022, he received a Rs 14 crore tax notice. Initially, he dismissed it, thinking it was because of some error. But when he received it for the second time for the Rs 30 crore notice on March 26, 2025, he got alarmed and decided to investigate.

According to a report by the Free Press Journal, Kumar, with the help of his friend, came to know that two fake GST numbers had been registered by using his PAN and are linked to firms that have allegedly conducted huge transactions. He stated that he does not have any connection to these firms. He only came to know about it through the notice.

As per the Free Press Journal report, the local police SP City stated that no official complaint has been made so far; once they receive it, they will probe the matter.

This case is part of a disturbing trend taking place in Uttar Pradesh. In the last two weeks, three more people from lower-income backgrounds have received similar notice for amounts mounting into crores.
