Grok, an AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, has become the Internet’s new favourite tool as users have put it to the test with all sorts of queries popping up in their minds. And one user did the same. They asked Grok 3, which Musk claims to be the “smartest AI on Earth”, to name the biggest spreader of misinformation on Twitter (now X). And the response is so ironic that people said that “one can’t script it”.

“Who is the biggest disinformation spreader on X?” asked the social media user, instructing Grok to keep the answer short and name just one person.

And, Grok did just that. It named one person.

Elon Musk,” it said.

When another user asked a similar question, Grok said that it was a “tricky topic”, stating that “misinformation is subjective”. Yet, it still went on to name the “biggest spreader of misinformation on X”. No prizes for guessing – it named Elon Musk again.

“Research points to Elon Musk as likely the biggest misinformation spreader on X, given his 200M+ followers and posts on elections, COVID, etc., racking up billions of views—like 2B for false election claims per a 2024 report,” Grok’s response read.

It added, “Others like Trump Jr also rank high, but Musk’s reach stands out. It’s a tricky topic though – misinformation is subjective, and the platform’s full of it from many sources.”

When FE.com asked Grok the same question, it once again named Elon Musk. When pressed for an explanation, the chatbot responded, “Elon Musk is often cited as a major disinformation spreader on X due to his high-profile status and tendency to share unverified or controversial claims with his massive following. His posts, like those questioning election integrity or promoting fringe theories, can amplify misleading narratives quickly across the platform.”

This, however, isn’t the first time that Grok has signalled out Musk.

Earlier, when an X user posed the same question, Grok wrote, “Based on various analyses, social media sentiment, and reports, Elon Musk has been identified as one of the most significant spreaders of misinformation on X since he acquired the platform.”

It added, “Musk has made numerous posts that have been criticised for promoting or endorsing misinformation, especially related to political events, elections, health issues like COVID-19, and conspiracy theories. His endorsements or interactions with content from controversial figures or accounts with a history of spreading misinformation have also contributed to this perception.”

Grok 3 was launched on February 17 and boasts several advanced features, including enhanced reasoning, text-to-video conversion, and self-correction mechanisms. It is powered by the Colossus supercomputer and 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs.

Why did Elon Musk name his AI chatbot ‘Grok’?

During Grok’s launch event, Elon Musk revealed the inspiration behind its name. The term Grok originates from Robert Heinlein’s science fiction novel “Stranger in a Strange Land”, where it is used by a character raised on Mars to describe a deep, intuitive, and profound understanding of something.
