The authorities are investigating the mysterious deaths of actor Gene Hackman, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, after they were found dead alongside their dog in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home. The couple’s bodies were discovered Wednesday afternoon following a welfare check initiated by a concerned neighbor.
Early investigations suggest that a potential gas leak could be involved. The Santa Fe City Fire Department responded to the scene and conducted tests for carbon monoxide but found no signs of a leak or poisoning. However, there is a possibility that if carbon monoxide had been present, it could have dissipated through the open front door before responders arrived. New Mexico Gas Company also investigated the home’s gas lines and found no evidence of any issues with the pipes or gas supply.
Despite this, authorities are still exploring other potential causes of death. The manner and cause remain unknown, but the circumstances surrounding the scene have led officials to deem the deaths suspicious enough to warrant further investigation. At this point, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office has ruled out foul play.
Discovery of the bodies and family reactions
Hackman and Arakawa were found in separate rooms of their home, showing signs of death upon discovery. The search warrant affidavit states that Hackman was found in the mudroom, and it appeared he may have collapsed suddenly. Arakawa was discovered on the bathroom floor, with a space heater near her body. Her remains showed clear signs of decomposition, including mummification of her hands and feet.
Nearby, an open prescription bottle with scattered pills was found near Arakawa, and a German Shepherd was discovered dead about 10 to 15 feet from her body, the document read. Two other dogs, however, were found alive at the home.
Two maintenance workers said they hadn’t heard from the actor and his wife in about two weeks, the document stated. When the worker initially arrived, they found the front door open, but there were no signs of forced entry or anything disturbed inside the house.
Family members have expressed concerns, with speculation around the cause of death focusing on potential carbon monoxide poisoning. However, no definitive cause has been confirmed yet.
The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the exact circumstances behind the deaths.
