”Hi, this is Chris from Coldplay. We’re in Hong Kong,” Martin starts the video clip. ”I’ve noticed that some people lately, including myself, are struggling a little bit with depression.” His message was simple but impactful, even among the global applause, the human experience of emotional struggle continues. ”So , I wanted to talk to you about some things that are helping me on tour and in life in general, in the hope that they can help you as well.”
Among the tips, Martin says that he depends on a 12-minute daily routine of freeform writing. Through it, he put out his thoughts on paper, only to get rid of them immediately after. ”It’s really good for you,” he added.
He also hails transcendental meditation, terming it ”wonderful,” and endorses a body-awareness technique, proprioception. ”There’s a man named Jim Costello, ”he says, ”he came up with the Costello Method, which is very helpful, especially for young people with ADHD or autism.”
Fans show support on social media
Martin also shared his appreciation for a book. He mentioned ”The Oxygen Advantage’’ by Patrick McKeown, a book with emphasis on mental clarity and breath control. He also recommended listening to Jon Hopkins’s ”Music for Psychedelic Therapy,” and watching the movie Sing Sing, which has music by Chloe Qisha, whose work ”makes me happy”.
”These are some of the things that help me stay grateful and happy to be alive.” He concluded his video message. ”I hope you are well, I send you lots of love.”
Martin’s openness attracted lots of support on social media. One user commented, ”Depression sucks..It’s a giant wave that just hits ya..I wish Chris well.” Another posted, ”A lot of these replies are very disheartening. Depression does not discriminate, and anyone suffering from it need not be judged or ridiculed.”
Echoing Martin’s perspective, a fan added, ”Attitude of gratitude on a daily basis is all I need to keep me sane and happy.”
