A clash on the New Delhi-Bhopal Vande Bharat Express on June 19 has sparked controversy after BJP MLA Rajeev Singh Parichha from Babina lodged a non-cognisable report (NCR) with the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Jhansi. The incident began as a dispute over seating and allegedly escalated into an altercation at Jhansi station.

According to Singh, the argument started when he requested co-passenger Raj Prakash to adjust his seat, as Singh was travelling with his wife and son. Singh alleged that the other passenger responded indecently, using abusive language, which worsened the situation. The MLA claimed that after reaching Jhansi, the passenger gathered a few people who misbehaved with his family.

Police await second complaint

Following the MLA’s written complaint, GRP Jhansi confirmed registering an NCR. However, as the matter is non-cognisable, no First Information Report (FIR) has been filed. Police noted that further legal action requires either a court order or a formal complaint from the other party.

Initial media reports claimed the MLA’s aide assaulted the passenger after he refused to give up his seat. However, police have not confirmed these allegations. Superintendent of Police Vipul Kumar Srivastav told PTI that the passenger indicated he would file a complaint upon reaching Bhopal, but no complaint has been registered so far.

CCTV footage to be reviewed

Srivastav added, “The matter will be thoroughly investigated once a formal complaint is received. CCTV footage from the train and Jhansi station will also be examined as part of the probe.”

The incident has sparked debate online over public safety on trains and the behavior of elected representatives. Authorities assured that appropriate action will be taken once the investigation is complete.

Social media reaction to the scuffle

The incident has sparked sharp criticism online, with many of them questioning the safety of passengers and the conduct of public officials. One social media user commented, “No safety for the passengers in Vande Bharat Express.” Another post tagged senior leaders of BJP, “@AmitShaji must expel such non-civilised and non-sensitive members of his party. @narendramodi”.

A third user demanded immediate action, stating, “He needs to resign.”
