Anurag Kashyap has issued a fresh apology, his second in a week, over his ‘urinate on Brahmins’ remark while responding to a comment on Instagram. The award-winning filmmaker said that he “forgot his limits” in anger and made the out-of-line remark, which he now regrets. He also vowed to work on his anger issues and hoped that people, including his fans, friends and family, would forgive him.
This comes after he apologised for his remarks earlier this week, but said that he stands by his original comments and has no intention of retracting them. He earlier clarified that the apology was for a specific comment, which he said, was taken out of context.
Anurag Kashyap on Brahmin row: ‘Forgot my limits…’
“In anger, I forgot my limits while replying to someone and spoke ill about the entire Brahmin community. That community whose many people have been in my life, are still there and contributes a lot,” he wrote in a post on Instagram in Hindi.
He acknowledged that after his remarks, people from the Brahmin community, his family, “are hurt by his anger and way of speaking”.
Kashyap went on to say, “By making such a remark, I myself deviated from my own point of view. I sincerely apologise to this society to whom I did not want to say this, but wrote it in anger while responding to someone’s cheap comment.”
“I apologise to all my friends, my family and the society for my way of speaking and for the abusive language,” he expressed, adding that he will work on his anger issues to ensure this doesn’t happen again.
“I will work on it so that this does not happen again. I will work on my anger. And if I have to talk about the issue, I will use the right words,” the 52-year-old said, before adding, “I hope you will forgive me.”
Anurag Kashyap’s first apology after Brahmin remark
“This is my apology, not for my post but for that one line taken out of context and the brewing hatred. No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, friends, and colleagues getting rape and death threats from the kingpins of sanskar (cultural values),” Kashyap wrote.
“I won’t take back what I said. Abuse me all you want. My family didn’t say anything. If you want an apology, here it is,” he added. In another Instagram Story, Kashyap shared a screenshot of the controversial comment and wrote, “Everyone has read the response… and they’re all outraged as well. At least look at the context before you write.”
The comment that started it all
The controversy stems from a viral Instagram comment made by Kashyap. While responding to a provocative comment, he wrote, “Brahmin pe main m*****a..koi problem [I’ll pee on Brahmins… any problem]?”
“Brahmins tumhare baap hain. Jitna tumhari unse sulgegi, utna tumhari sulgaayenge [Brahmins are your fathers. The more you clash with them, the more they’ll burn you],” read the comment that made Kashyap furious.
The comment war was in response to the film Phule, based on social reformers Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule, which he was defending against calls for censorship.
FIR against Kashyap
Anil Chaturvedi, who lives in Jaipur’s Barkat Nagar, filed a complaint against Kashyap for his remarks about the Brahmin community. In his complaint, he alleged that Kashyap used abusive words for the community while replying to the comment. The Bajaj Nagar police station acted upon his complaint and registered an FIR.
