Indian ace batter Smriti Mandhana’s biggest off-field moment happened on the same turf where she recently lifted the Women’s World Cup. At Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium, her fiancé, singer Palash Muchhal, set up a romantic surprise proposal. A video he shared showed him leading a blindfolded Smriti to the pitch. When the blindfold comes off, she finds Palash kneeling with a ring. Smriti smiles as Palash pops the question. The singer captioned the video on Instagram with the answer – “She said yes”.
Smriti announces her engagement with a bollywood track
Following this, Smriti took to Instagram to announce her engagement through a playful, choreographed Instagram reel with her India teammates. The viral video showcased Jemimah Rodrigues, Shreyanka Patil, Radha Yadav and Arundhati Reddy dancing along Smriti to the upbeat track “Samjho Ho Hi Gaya” from Lage Raho Munna Bhai.
What initially looked like a light-hearted team dance ended with Smriti flashing her engagement ring at the camera. The video which was posted a day back has since gone viral and has garnered millions views alongside much love from fans.
PM Modi reveals the wedding date
However, the biggest surprise regarding the engagement and soon-to-be wedding came from the Prime Minister. Greeting the recently betrothed couple, PM Narendra Modi penned an official note congratulating Smriti and Palaash where he said that Mandhana’s “cover drive” and Muchhal’s “musical symphony” would make for a beautiful partnership.
The Prime Minister’s note also revealed November 23 as the date of the wedding, beating the couple to the public announcement of their own wedding. The couple has since then gained much love and support from fans world wide, sports journalist-anchor Sanjana Ganeshan called it the “Best thing on the Internet today!”
From lifting a world title to making her engagement Instagram-official, DY Patil stadium will surely serve as an important venue in Smriti’s memory.
