Ahmedabad-based business conglomerate Torrent Group is set to become the majority stakeholder in the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Gujarat Titans. According to ESPNcricinfo, Torrent Group will acquire a 67% stake in GT from CVC Capital Partners, the current majority owners.

The report also states that the IPL is currently processing the necessary paperwork before the league’s governing council grants final approval.

Gujarat Titans was established in 2021, with CVC Capital Partners, a global private equity firm, securing ownership for ₹5,625 crore. The franchise is based in Ahmedabad and plays its home matches at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Torrent Sports Ventures Private Limited, a subsidiary of Torrent Group, had previously bid for one of the two new franchises when the IPL expanded from eight to ten teams in 2021.

As per the company’s official website, Torrent Group is valued at Rs 41,000 crore.

Currently, Gujarat Titans are led by Shubman Gill, with former India pacer Ashish Nehra serving as head coach. The team made an immediate impact, winning the IPL title in its debut season in 2022 under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy. In 2023, they topped the points table but were eliminated in the playoffs. Last season, they finished eighth in the 10-team tournament.

The squad boasts a lineup of match-winners, including Afghan spin maestro Rashid Khan, English dynamo Jos Buttler and India’s pace spearhead Mohammed Siraj. Gill’s captaincy will be closely watched as he aims to steer the Titans back to their dominant best. The 2025 season offers a prime opportunity for GT to reassert themselves as one of the IPL’s elite teams.
