It was a triumphant moment as Team India’s fielding coach, T Dilip, hosted the fielding ceremony following India’s victory in the T20 World Cup 2024. The Indian camp was ecstatic, celebrating their historic achievement as the new world champions. This time, BCCI secretary Jay Shah was invited to present the fielding medal award. Suryakumar Yadav received the medal for his ‘World Cup-winning’ catch in the final over. This tradition of acknowledging the best fielding effort of the match had a fitting conclusion.
Jay Shah awarded the medal to Suryakumar, who was thrilled to receive it and proudly displayed both his World Cup medal and the best fielding medal. Suryakumar’s catch was compared to Kapil Dev’s iconic catch from the 1983 World Cup. South Africa needed 16 runs in the final over to win their first World Cup title, with David Miller at the crease poised to change the game’s outcome.
Miller looked determined to secure the win, hitting the first ball towards long-off. As the ball soared through the air, everyone held their breath, but a calm and composed Suryakumar made a brilliant catch at the long-off boundary. The 33-year-old caught the ball and quickly threw it back, avoiding the momentum that carried him over the fence. He then jumped back in to complete one of the greatest catches in ICC event history.
BCCI shares special ceremony video featuring T Dilip’s praise and Suryakumar’s catch
The official Instagram handle of the BCCI shared a special video of the ceremony, where T Dilip praised the team:
“We talk about rising to the occasion in big games. Today, we didn’t just rise; we conquered. The intensity, camaraderie, and resilience shown today and throughout the tournament were nothing short of extraordinary, like a pack of wolves. Rahul and Rohit kept emphasising that everyone knew their role, and together we seized every opportunity, leaving no stone unturned,” T Dilip said.
“Thank you so much, sir, for giving me this opportunity and collecting this medal from Jay sir,” Suryakumar said.
