Former India batter Vinod Kambli has been enduring severe health challenges in recent years. In December, he was hospitalised for urinary infections and cramps, staying under medical care for two weeks before being discharged on January 1. Alongside his health battles, Kambli has also faced financial difficulties, openly acknowledging his struggles.
Gavaskar steps in through CHAMPS Foundation
In a heartening gesture, legendary India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has now stepped forward to support Kambli. Fulfilling a promise he made earlier, Gavaskar has extended financial assistance to Kambli through his CHAMPS Foundation, an organisation dedicated to helping former international sportspersons in need.
As per reports, from April 1, Kambli will receive a monthly financial aid of Rs 30,000 for the rest of his life. Additionally, he will be provided with an annual medical assistance package of Rs 30,000 to help manage his healthcare expenses.
What Gavaskar said?
Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar had previously expressed his concern for cricketers like Kambli who have fallen on hard times. He emphasised that the 1983 World Cup-winning team and other senior players remain deeply connected to their juniors, considering them like sons and grandsons.
“I don’t like the word help. What we want to do is take care of him,” Gavaskar remarked, underlining the fraternity’s commitment to looking after fellow cricketers in distress. He reaffirmed that the cricketing community stands ready to support those whose fortunes may waver after their playing careers end.
