The thrilling India-Pakistan Asia Cup final match may have ended but social media is still flooded with reactions and questions as to what happened during the match, the drama after the clash as well as the line-up. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who is himself a cricket lover, asked if it was a wise decision to send Shubhman Gill to open the match along with Abhishek Sharma instead of Sanju Samson.
Tharoor suggested that sending Samson to number five where he was seemingly not “comfortable”, does not justify the change. The MP mentioned that Shubhman Gill’s performance in the tournament is also contrary to the changes.
What did Tharoor say?
In a social media post on X, Shashi Tharoor shared his suggestion on the team line up. “That said, it is fair to ask a few questions, without in any way detracting from our victory. Was it right to break up the hugely successful opening partnership of @abhisheksharm06 and @IamSanjuSamson, and relegate a three-time centurion to a middle slot where he was uncomfortable?” Tharoor said in a post on X.
“Did Gill’s performances at the #AsiaCup justify such a change?” he further asked.

He suggested that it would possibly be better to “restore Sanju to the place where he has shone for India, put Gill at number three, and have Surya take the number five slot instead? #JustAsking @GautamGambhir @BCCI.”
What happened in India-Pak clash?
India won the Asia Cup after defeating Pakistan in a nail-biting match that had people on both sides on their toes. Rinku Singh hit the victory shot leading the India-Pak tally in Asia Cup to a 3-0. However, what happened after the clash grabbed more eyeballs as Indian team refused to take the Asia Cup trophy from Pakistan interior minister Mohsin Naqvi.
Jilted with the gesture, Naqvi left but took the trophy with him, further intensifying the drama. The Indian team celebrated imitating the trophy handover, and the celebration went ahead without the trophy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other politicians praised the team and mentioned Operation Sindoor. The tournament had begun on a controversial note as many politicians were against India playing Pakistan in the Asia Cup and said that it should be boycotted.
