Shubman Gill’s performance in One Day Internationals continues to make an impact, earning him the vice-captaincy of the Indian team. Captain Rohit Sharma recently spoke about Gill saying there is a reason why he has been made the vice-captain of the side.
While Gill’s Test tour of Australia was less than impressive, as was the case for many Indian batters, his record in ODIs remains strong. “Gill is a very, very classy player. There was never a doubt about his ability in this squad,” Rohit commented on Wednesday.
He further emphasized the difference in formats, saying that a rough patch in one form doesn’t automatically translate to struggles in another.
Rohit also pointed out that Gill’s consistency in ODIs has been evident for several years now, with the 25-year-old accumulating 2587 runs in 50 matches at an average of 60.16, including seven centuries and 15 half-centuries. “There’s a reason he has been elevated to be the vice-captain of the team as well,” Rohit said.
“Hopefully, he has a great tournament and it will eventually help us achieve the things that we are looking to achieve,” added Rohit.
Despite his success in the 50-over format, Gill’s performances in Tests and T20s have been more mixed, with 1893 runs from 32 Test matches at 35.05 and a modest 578 runs from 21 T20Is at an average of 30.42. However, his contributions in the ODIs have been enough to secure his place in the leadership group.
