Ranji Trophy 2025: India’s star cricketers are set to return to domestic cricket following a disappointing run in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India captain Rohit Sharma will make his first Ranji Trophy appearance in nearly a decade, as he and rising talent Yashasvi Jaiswal have been named in Mumbai’s squad for their match against Jammu and Kashmir, starting January 23 at MCA-BKC Ground in Mumbai.
Meanwhile, megastar Virat Kohli has announced that he will miss Delhi’s fixture against Saurashtra in Rajkot due to a neck niggle.
In another match, experienced batter KL Rahul, recovering from an elbow injury, has been excluded from Karnataka’s squad for their Elite Group C clash against Punjab, starting on January 23 in Bengaluru.
India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is also set to feature in Saurashtra’s Ranji Trophy game against Delhi from January 23, having participated in the team’s practice session in Rajkot on Sunday. Jadeja last played for Saurashtra in January 2023.

Ranji Trophy 2025 Format and Rules
The Ranji Trophy 2025 follows a traditional league format, divided into multiple groups: Elite Groups A, B, C, and D. Each team competes in round-robin matches within their respective groups. The top teams from each group advance to the knockout stages, which include quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final. Matches are played over four days, adhering to first-class cricket rules.
Each team gets two innings, and matches can result in a win, loss, draw, or tie. Points are awarded based on results, with outright wins earning maximum points. If a match ends in a draw, bonus points are allocated based on first-innings leads. The team with the most points at the end of the league stage progresses further.
The competition culminates in the final, where the two top teams vie for the prestigious Ranji Trophy. The tournament provides a vital platform for domestic cricketers to showcase their skills.
