Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (December 23) shared a photograph from his meeting with India’s Olympic javelin champion Neeraj Chopra and his wife, Himani Mor, at his official residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, in New Delhi. The interaction marked Neeraj’s first personal meeting with the Prime Minister at his residence, outside of official engagements involving India’s medal-winning athletes.

A report carried by Bhaskar claims that Neeraj extended an invite to PM for his wedding reception. Neeraj married Himani in January 2025 in a ceremony only attended by close friends and family.

In the picture shared on social media, Neeraj was seen dressed in an ivory-coloured sherwani, while Prime Minister Modi opted for a black striped safari suit. Himani Mor complemented the occasion in a green velvet jacket paired with a traditional outfit.

“Met Neeraj Chopra and his wife, Himani Mor, at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg earlier today. We had a great interaction on various issues, including sports of course!” the Prime Minister wrote while posting the image.

Neeraj has interacted with PM Modi before

While this was Neeraj’s first personal interaction with the Prime Minister in New Delhi, the two have crossed paths earlier during official events. The Haryana-born javelin thrower was part of India’s Olympic athletes’ delegations hosted by the Prime Minister in 2021 and 2024, following his historic gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics and his silver medal at the Paris Games.

Neeraj tied the knot with Himani Mor in a private ceremony in January. Himani, a former national-level tennis player, has since transitioned into sports management. She is currently studying and working in the United States, where she is also involved in coaching and managing college women’s tennis teams.

Neeraj India’s most successful track and field athlete

Neeraj’s journey remains one of the most remarkable success stories in Indian sport. Introduced to javelin almost by chance as a teenager aiming to lose weight, he rose swiftly through the junior ranks, displaying a rare combination of discipline, composure and natural talent. His first major breakthrough came in 2016 when he won gold at the World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, setting a world junior record of 86.48 metres- a performance that announced India’s arrival on the global javelin stage.

The defining moment of his career arrived at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where Neeraj clinched gold with a throw of 87.58m, becoming India’s first-ever Olympic gold medallist in athletics. The victory elevated him to national hero status and ignited unprecedented interest in track and field across the country.

He followed that up with a silver medal at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, before scaling even greater heights in 2023 by winning gold at the World Championships in Budapest, a first for an Indian athlete. Neeraj has also been a consistent force on the Diamond League circuit, winning the title in 2022 and finishing among the leading contenders regularly.

Although he could not defend his Olympic gold in Paris last year, Neeraj returned home with a silver medal, joining an elite group of Indian athletes with multiple individual Olympic medals. Now firmly established among world athletics’ elite, Neeraj continues to shoulder India’s medal hopes while inspiring a new generation to dream big.
