Mohun Bagan Super Giant: Mohun Bagan Super Giant continued their dominant run in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season, securing a commanding 2-0 win over NorthEast United FC at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati on Sunday. The victory, powered by second-half goals from Manvir Singh and Liston Colaco, took the Mariners to the top of the league table with 23 points.
The match began with high intensity as Mohun Bagan took the initiative early on. The first real chance came in the 10th minute when Liston Colaco, after beating a couple of defenders, struck the post. Nine minutes later, NorthEast United nearly seized the advantage when Alaaeddine Ajaraie’s cross found Nestor Albiach, whose powerful shot was brilliantly saved by Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith.
The Mariners came close again just before halftime when Dimitrios Petratos’ cross found Liston Colaco in the box. Despite beating his marker, Liston’s shot lacked the power to trouble NorthEast’s goalkeeper, Gurmeet Singh. Moments before the break, Petratos unleashed a long-range effort, but Gurmeet produced another excellent save to keep the game goalless at halftime.
The breakthrough came in the 65th minute when Manvir Singh cut in from the right flank and unleashed a stunning shot into the top left corner, leaving the NorthEast United defense stunned. Despite the Highlanders’ promising start to the second half, the goal shifted the momentum firmly in favor of Mohun Bagan.
Building on their lead, the Mariners struck again in the 71st minute. Liston Colaco received the ball, beat his marker with a deft cut, and curled a beautiful shot into the far post, doubling the visitors’ advantage.
Mohun Bagan’s defense, bolstered by substitutions including Greg Stewart and Deepak Tangri in the 87th minute, held firm despite late pressure from NorthEast United. The visitors showcased exceptional defensive discipline, securing their sixth clean sheet of the season.
