ICC Chairman Greg Barclay will not be opting for a third term after his tenure ends on November 30. An ICC chairman can serve up to three terms of two years each, and Barclay, a New Zealand-based attorney, has already completed four years in the role.

The ICC announced that Barclay confirmed to the board that he will not stand for a third term and will be stepping down from the post at the end of his tenure. “Barclay was appointed as the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020, before being re-elected in 2022,” it added.

According to ICC rules, the chairman’s election involves 16 votes, with a simple majority of nine votes (51%) required to win. Previously, a two-thirds majority was necessary to become the chairman.

Jay Shah to be ICC Chairman?

Speculations have been doing the rounds that BCCI Chairman Jay Shah could become the ICC Chairman. It will be clear by August 27, the deadline for filing nominations for the chairman’s post, whether Shah is interested in entering the race.

As per reports, Shah is considered one of the most influential people in the ICC board room. As of now, he is the ICC’s all-powerful Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA) sub-committee’s head.

He has strong goodwill with most of the 16 voting members. Currently, Shah has one year remaining as the BCCI secretary before he must undergo a mandatory three-year cooling-off period starting in October 2025.

At 35, he has a chance of becoming the youngest chairman in ICC history.
