In a major setback for Team India, star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled to begin on February 19. Bumrah, who sustained a back injury during the final Test against Australia in Sydney last month, has failed to regain full fitness. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed his absence on Tuesday night, announcing Harshit Rana as his replacement in the squad.

This marks the second time Bumrah has missed a major ICC tournament due to injury, having previously sat out the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.

“Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a lower back injury. The Men’s Selection Committee has named Harshit Rana as Bumrah’s replacement,” the BCCI stated in a press release.

Varun Chakaravarthy earns spot
In another squad update, spinner Varun Chakaravarthy has secured a place in the 15-member squad after his stellar performance in the recent T20I series against England. Chakaravarthy, who claimed 14 wickets in five matches, earned an ODI call-up in Cuttack, where he picked up 1/54. He replaces Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was originally named in the provisional squad.

“Team India have also named Varun Chakaravarthy in the squad. The spinner will replace Yashasvi Jaiswal,” the BCCI release added.
