Jammu and Kashmir’s Bilquis Mir is all set to make history as the first woman from India to serve as a jury member at the upcoming Summer Olympics in Paris, which is scheduled from July 26 to August 11 this year in Paris.
Her appointment as a jury member for the Paris Games was officially communicated through a letter from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to the Jammu and Kashmir administration.
“Bilquis Mir, a prominent figure in water sports promotion, development, and as an athlete, has been nominated as a jury member to officiate at the Paris Olympics games by the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association. She is the first individual from India to be appointed as a jury member at the Paris Olympics,” the IOA letter mentioned.
Expressing her gratitude after being appointed as a jury member for the prestigious Summer Olympics, Bilquis said it is a dream come true, as the Olympics represents the ultimate destination for athletes and sports promoters like herself.
A seasoned canoeing champion
Reflecting on her journey, Bilquis said she began her canoeing career on Dal Lake in 1998 and subsequently represented the country in various events, ANI reported.
Further, she also mentioned her role as the former coach of the Indian women’s canoeing team set to compete at the Paris Games this year. Additionally, she highlighted her experience as a jury member at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, last year.
Notably, Bilquis started her canoeing career with a humble beginning, which over the year turned into a remarkable Journey, including representing her state and country in national and international events.
In 2008, she qualified as a jury member for her exemplary conduct and performance at top sporting events, including the Hangzhou Asian Games last year.
