In the wake of the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede that claimed 11 lives, the Karnataka government has removed MLC K Govindaraj from his position as political secretary to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah with immediate effect. The move comes amid mounting backlash over the June 4 tragedy during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebration, which saw a crowd of over two lakh people overwhelm the venue.
CM Siddaramaiah on Thursday also suspended Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda and four other senior officials over lapses in crowd management and public safety.
What led to the chaos?
As per PTI, the police attributed the tragedy to confusion over the timing of the parade and the distribution of free passes. This mismanagement, they said, led to overcrowding and panic. The Chinnaswamy Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 35,000, was flooded by an estimated 2 to 3 lakh people. Many without passes tried to force entry, leading to chaos. Several fans fell or were injured while attempting to climb over the stadium gates.
CM Siddaramaiah confirms casualties
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed the death toll and injuries, calling the stampede a tragic incident. He stated that the government is closely monitoring the situation.
Further adding to the disarray, RCB’s management team had posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the victory parade would begin at 5 PM. The post reportedly led to large crowds assembling early and in uncontrolled numbers, worsening the situation.

Bengaluru Stampede live updates: BJP MP Shobha Karandlaje demands accountability from K’taka govt
Union Minister and BJP MP Shobha Karandlaje visits Bowring Hospital.
“Stampede happened at Chinnaswamy Stadium. The government decided to facilitate a celebration abruptly, without any planning. Why did they think of celebrating inside Vidhana Soudha and Shakti Soudha? This wasn’t even a government program. Eleven people have died – who will take responsibility? There were children, students, who will be held accountable? I demand a judicial inquiry under a sitting High Court judge, and DK Shivakumar must immediately resign. We’ll see what happens after that.”
Bengaluru Stampede live updates: ‘State-sponsored man-made tragedy’ – Shehzad Poonawalla slams K’taka govt
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla slammed the Congress-led Bengaluru government for the stampede.
He said, “This is the height of shamelessness. It is arrogance after apathy, delusion and denial after disaster. What should have been a celebration turned into a catastrophe. It is a state-sponsored man-made tragedy and disaster for which Congress is entirely responsible. Look at the response of the Chief Minister (Siddaramaiah). He says many incidents take place. Kumbh took place. He’s blaming other states and saying, I have never raised these issues. What does he mean? The deputy CM (DK Shivakumar) blames the crowds but does not take responsibility… Instead of taking accountability and responsibility, Congress is again trying to blame the people. They have put publicity above people. They continued the show after lives were being lost… Congress should take accountability, and the CM and Deputy CM should immediately resign.”
