IPL 2025 Super Over rules: The number of Super Overs in one IPL game to determine the winner shall be time-tailored but not by the number of overs. Super Overs will continue to be conducted without a particular limit until a winner emerges, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) intends to complete the tie-breaker within an hour. During these Super Overs, each team is allowed one unsuccessful DRS review.
According to a Cricbuzz report, BCCI has set guidelines during the recent Captains’ Meet which state, “Any number of Super Overs as may be necessary may be played within one hour from the end of the main match. The first Super Over must start within 10 minutes from the end of that match. If this Super Over ends in a tie, then the next must start within five minutes of the end of the previous over.”
The last Super Over will be determined by the match referee, but it should not go for more than the hour. All warnings and penalties from the main match carry forward into the Super Overs. Each team will also get an unsuccessful review of a decision taken in a Super Over.
BCCI’s official Super Over rules:
- No limitation of the number of balls is applicable in determining the total runs scored by either team, as either might win the match with or without losing its wickets.
- If two wickets fall, then the team’s innings ends.
- Every Super Over shall continue until a winner is found, except in exceptional circumstances, in the case of a tie at the end of the first Super Over.
- Super Over to be held on the same day and 10 mins after the main match. If there are any unnecessary stoppages during the Super Overs, they may extend the time for completing the over or allocate pace for additional overs.
- Only players of the main match, including concussion replacements, may participate in the Super Over.
- The fielding team selects the end from which it will bowl, and the team batting second in the main match will bat first in the Super Over.
- Both teams are entitled to one unsuccessful review per Super Over.
