Mumbai Indians (MI) finally got off the mark in IPL 2025 in emphatic style, delivering a dominant performance against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Debutant Ashwani Kumar stole the show with a sensational four-wicket haul, while Ryan Rickelton’s unbeaten 62 guided MI to a commanding eight-wicket victory.

The 23-year-old Ashwani, hailing from Punjab’s Jhanjeri, etched his name in history by becoming the first Indian to claim four wickets on IPL debut. His fiery spell of 3-0-24-4 dismantled KKR’s formidable batting lineup, setting up an easy chase for MI.

With this win, MI have surged to sixth place in the points table, while KKR find themselves at the bottom. Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants’ Nicholas Pooran leads the Orange Cap race with 145 runs and Chennai Super Kings’ Noor Ahmad holds the Purple Cap with nine wickets.

Despite Rohit Sharma (13) failing to make an impact, Ryan Rickelton shone with an unbeaten 62 off 41 balls, smashing four boundaries and five sixes to guide Mumbai Indians to victory. Suryakumar Yadav provided the finishing touch with a blistering 27* off just nine deliveries, sealing the win in style with a six behind the wicket. Mumbai chased down the target comfortably with 7.1 overs to spare.
