Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made a significant change to their squad on Friday, adding South African international Dewald Brevis as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh in IPL 2025. Gurjapneet, a left-arm fast-medium bowler, has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to an undisclosed injury, and his recovery is expected to take several weeks.

CSK head coach Stephen Fleming expressed disappointment over losing Gurjapneet but welcomed Brevis with optimism. “While it’s unfortunate to lose Gurjapneet for the remaining matches of this season, we’re excited to welcome Dewald. He’s a talented young player who can make a big impact,” said Fleming in an official statement.

The 21-year-old Proteas batter, often dubbed the ‘Baby AB de Villiers’ for his playing style reminiscent of AB de Villiers, was part of the Mumbai Indians squad in IPL 2022 and 2024. Though retained by Mumbai in 2023, he did not feature in any games that year. Brevis is known for his aggressive batting, capable of hitting big shots, and his ability to bowl leg spin when needed.

Brevis will add depth to CSK’s middle order and is expected to bring explosive energy to the team. He will wear jersey number 17 for Chennai.

CSK’s Current Position

Chennai Super Kings are currently struggling at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table, having won only two out of the seven matches they have played so far. With Brevis joining the squad, CSK will look to strengthen their lineup as they aim to turn their fortunes around, starting with their upcoming match against Mumbai Indians on April 20.
