RCB vs LSG: Rishabh Pant signed off from IPL 2025 with a sensational unbeaten 118* off just 61 deliveries, finally breaking free from a forgettable run of form. His knock — studded with 11 fours and eight sixes — powered Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to a formidable 227/3 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Lucknow on Tuesday. Batting at No. 3, Pant took control after Matthew Breetzke was bowled early, building a record 152-run stand with Mitchell Marsh, who smashed 67 off 31 balls. Pant’s innings was not only his personal best of the season but also one of the most explosive knocks of IPL 2025.

Bitter ending despite brilliance

Despite Pant’s heroics, LSG’s hopes for a playoff spot came crashing down as RCB chased down the 228-run target with six wickets in hand in just 18.4 overs. The loss meant LSG were eliminated from the tournament, finishing seventh in the points table. Meanwhile, RCB’s win helped them seal the second spot and a direct entry into Qualifier 1, where they will face Punjab Kings.

Costly over-rate offence

Adding to Pant’s disappointment, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) slapped a hefty Rs 30 lakh fine on him for a slow over rate — LSG’s third such offence this season. The BCCI, in its statement, confirmed that the breach occurred during Match No. 70 against RCB. The fine was stiffer than the standard Rs 12 lakh penalty since it was a repeat violation. Moreover, all other LSG players, including the Impact Player, were fined Rs 12 lakh or 50 per cent of their match fee, whichever was lower.

RCB’s historic away record

Bengaluru not only booked a playoff spot but also made IPL history by becoming the first team to win all their away matches in a single season. Their convincing run chase showcased depth and confidence, setting up a high-voltage clash with Punjab Kings on Thursday. Gujarat Titans dropped to third and will face Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator on Friday.

With the league phase wrapped up, the IPL 2025 playoffs are set. While Pant’s majestic knock will be remembered, LSG’s campaign ended with missed opportunities and disciplinary issues. The winner of Qualifier 1 advances directly to the final, while the loser will get another shot in Qualifier 2 against the winner of the Eliminator.
