Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma has said that he will open the batting in Indian Premier League (IPL)-9. He revealed this in a press conference for Mumbai Indians. Last year, Rohit Sharma was seen batting on number 4 spot which did not work for him or his side. Many cricket analysts also blamed Rohit Sharma’s poor form as the Mumbai team failed to qualify for the playoffs.
Rohit Sharma has been the backbone of the Mumbai Indians’ batting lineup for a very long time. With players like Evin Lewis and Quinton De Kock in the side, it will be interesting to see who opens the innings with Rohit Sharma. The Mumbai Indians captain has played 173 games and averages 31.87 in the IPL.
Sharma started his IPL career with Deccan Chargers and managed to score 350 plus runs in the first two seasons of the T20 league. His consistent performances helped him land a contract with the Mumbai Indians in 2011. Since then Rohit Sharma has been the most consistent batsman for the Mumbai Indians side.
Even after a string of low scores for the national side, Rohit Sharma was persisted with by MS Dhoni. Sharma has gone on to score three double centuries in the ODI format of the game after being asked to open following his success in the IPL.
This year every Mumbai Indians fan will be hoping that Rohit Sharma finds form in the early stages of the tournament. Mumbai Indians will take on Delhi Capitals in their first match which will take place on March 24, 2019.
