Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mirabai Chanu has won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

She lifted a total weight of 193 kg to win a gold medal. Returning to competition after a year-long hiatus, Mirabai Chanu produced a record-breaking performance to secure the gold medal at the tournament on Monday.

The Tokyo Olympics silver medallist heaved a total of 193kg (84kg+109kg) to smash the Commonwealth total, snatch and clean and jerk records and stand at first position of the women’s 48kg podium.

The 31-year-old moved down from the 49kg weight class, which doesn’t feature in the Olympics anymore. She was competing for the first time since her fourth place finish in the Paris Games last August.

At her opening snatch attempt of 84 kg, Mirabai showed signs of discomfort in her right knee. She cleared this in her second attempt, but her third attempt of 89kg also failed.

In the next attempt, Chanu opened up with a 105kg lift in clean and jerk, improved it to 109kg. However, she could not complete the final attempt of 113kg. Malaysia’s Irene Henry bagged silver with a lift of 161kg (73kg+88kg), while Wales’ Nikole Roberts 150kg (70kg+80kg) took home the bronze.

The event marked Chanu’s return to the 48kg, a weight class in which she won her world championship title and two Commonwealth Games medals, but hasn’t competed in the competition since 2018.
