The upcoming sixth edition of the Lanka Premier League, which is slated to start from December 1, 2025 promises to be packed with action. The organisers for the tournament on Monday announced that for the very first time in history of this tournament, Indian cricketers are expected to join the action.

“Their names will be revealed soon, adding a whole new level of excitement for fans across the region,” Organisers stated in a press release. The Lanka premiere League is Sri Lanka’s top and most viewed annual T20 tournament. 

Lanka Premier League: What did the organisers say? 

“For the very first time, Indian cricketers are expected to join the action in the Lanka Premiere League, adding a whole new level of excitement for fans across the region,” the organisers for the tournament said in a press release that was published on Monday.

“The timing of this edition has been carefully chosen to ensure that players gain maximum exposure and high-quality match practice in the lead-up to a global cricketing year,” the organisers added.

The press release said that they hope the presence of Indian names and other international cricket stars will provide high quality exposure to younger players, paving the way for a fiery tournament. 

“This year too, we believe the league will throw up exciting new names who can go on to spring surprises on the world stage ahead of the World Cup,” the organisers said in their statement, hinting at the upcoming ICC 2027 World Cup.

Lanka Premier League: What is the format of the tournament?

The LPL 2025 will see five franchises competing in a double round-robin format. The tournament will feature a total of 24 matches, including 20 league stage games and 4 knockout fixtures.The knockout phase consists of four matches. Qualifier 1 will be fought between the top 2 of the four teams that made it to the knockout stages, meanwhile the third and fourth-placed sides will contest in an eliminator game. 

After the completion of the initial two matches of the playoffs, the winner of the elimination round  and the loser of Qualifier 1 will compete to book their spot in the grand finale. Matches will be staged at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, the Pallekele International Stadium in Kandy, and the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium.
