Vande Mataram chants took over DY Patil stadium in Navi Mumbai as India beat South Africa to claim the women’s ICC World Cup for the very first time. India’s women in blue delivered an absolutely stunning performance in the DY Patil Stadium to become World Champions. Harmanpreet Kaur’s women in blue delivered an outstanding performance from the start. A late entrant to India’s playing XI in the World Cup, Shafali Varma anchored India’s batting alongside Deepti Sharma who also scored a phenomenal half-century.
On the bowling end as well, Deepti Sharma and Shafali Varma led the charge for the national side. Shafali Varma who was not a part of the national squad till last week delivered a fantabulous performance in the final where she scored 87 runs of the 78 balls and took two vital wickets in the game to break some powerful partnerships for South Africa.
In light of her amazing achievements in this game, Shafali Varma was recognised as the player of the match in the World Cup final today. With this, Varma became the youngest player ever to receive the player of the match award in a World Cup final.
On receiving the award Varma expressed gratitude towards her parents and family who supported her from the very beginning and also talked about how Sachin Tendulkar served as the source of her inspiration.
” As I said at the start, that God has sent me here to do something nice, and that reflected today. Very happy that we won and I cannot express it in words. It was difficult but I had confidence in myself – that if I can stay calm, I could achieve everything. My parents, my friends, my brother, everyone supported me and helped me understand how to play. It was very important for my team and myself, and I just wanted to make my team win. My mind was clear and I worked on my plans. So happy that I could execute and Smriti di and Harman di, everyone was supporting me. They (seniors) asked me just to play my own game, and when you get that clarity, that is all you need. It is a very memorable moment. When I saw him (Sachin Tendulkar), it gave me an incredible boost. I keep talking to him, he keeps giving me confidence. He is the master of cricket, and we keep getting inspired just looking at him,” Varma told presenters at the end of the game.
Each side exorcised a long-standing demon to get here. South Africa finally broke England’s stranglehold in the semis, while India sent home the mighty Australians in front of a delirious home crowd. From South Africa’s side their skipper, Laura Wolvaardt, scored a massive 101 runs in the final, marking her second consecutive century in World Cup knockout games to become one of only two women to achieve such an incredible feat.
India’s woman with the golden arm, Deepti Sharma who took 5 wickets today with an economy of 4.11 was awarded the player of the tournament for an era-defining Women’s ICC World Cup 2025, which saw a new champion emerge and 2 record-breaking chases.
“Honestly, this is feeling like a dream because we have not been able to come out of that emotion. Feeling really nice I could contribute this way in a World Cup final. We have always thought about how we can use the takeaways from every match. Thanks to them (the people), this would not have been possible. As a team, we are feeling very happy. (On her responsibilities and roles and preparation) I always enjoy, whichever department I am in, or whichever situation is. I wanted to play according to the situation. Enjoyed a lot. As a stage, to perform as an all-rounder, it cannot be a more amazing feeling. Laura played a very good innings. But we were always calm, and cheering each other up. As a bowling unit, we were talking about going to the last ball and to focus on our best ball, and that is what we did. (On what she wants to see changing) There has been a lot of change since 2017. I hope there are even more matches now (for us). I just wanted to dedicate this (POTS) trophy to my mom and dad,” Deepti Sharma told the presenters after receiving the award.
IND vs SA Final Live Update: Renuka Singh Thakur’s inspiring journey
Renuka Singh Thakur’s love for cricket began on the streets of her Parsa village in Shimla district, where she played with boys using a wooden bat and balls made of cloth, her mother Sunita recalled.
“Renuka was always passionate about cricket and used to play the sport with boys since childhood. As a little girl, she used to make balls out of cloth and play with a wooden bat on the roadside,” Sunita said on Monday.
Her late husband, an ardent cricket lover, had always hoped that one of their children would excel in sports. “Even though he is not with us, my daughter has fulfilled his dreams,” Sunita added.
Renuka’s cricketing talent was first noticed by her uncle, Bhupinder Thakur, a physical education teacher. “He saw that this girl has potential and it was with his support that Renuka got the opportunity to move forward,” Sunita said. He sent her to the Dharamshala Cricket Academy, where her career truly began.
Ahead of India’s historic 52-run win over South Africa in the ICC Women’s World Cup final, Sunita encouraged her daughter over the phone: “Play for the country and not for you today and win the World Cup.” The family celebrated each falling South African wicket on Sunday and offered a feast to the entire village on Monday in honor of Renuka’s achievement.
Renuka’s father, Kehar Singh Thakur, who worked in the state’s irrigation and public health department, passed away when she was just three. She still carries a tattoo of his name on her hand. “Kehar was so much into cricket that he named his first child Vinod after Vinod Kambli,” Sunita’s relative shared.
From humble beginnings to lifting the World Cup, Renuka’s story is a testament to talent, perseverance, and the support of a family who believed in her dreams.
