India wrapped up the first Test in dominant fashion on Day 3, defeating West Indies by an innings and 140 runs. Kuldeep Yadav struck the final blow when Pierre drove one straight back to him and the bowler completed a sharp return catch. With that, India sealed a commanding victory and took a 1-0 lead in the series. India had declared their innings at 448 for 5 before the start of Day 3, with Jadeja unbeaten on 104 and Washington Sundar on 9.
The Indian batting lineup shone brightly, with Dhruv Jurel and KL Rahul both scoring centuries on Day 2. Their partnership gave India a commanding lead over the visitors. However, Shubman Gill missed out after attempting a risky reverse sweep against Roston Chase, losing his wicket soon after India had surpassed the West Indies’ first-innings total.
India vs West Indies: Early setback for West Indies
On the opening day, West Indies captain Roston Chase won the toss and chose to bat first. But the decision backfired as the Indian pacers dominated the session. Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah made full use of the humid conditions, generating swing and seam movement. Siraj took four wickets while Bumrah claimed three, bowling out the visitors for just 162 runs. Justin Greaves top-scored for West Indies with 32.
India began their innings cautiously and were briefly interrupted by rain. After the break, Yashasvi Jaiswal shifted gears and played some confident shots before falling for 36 to Jayden Seales. Sai Sudharsan’s innings was short-lived as he misjudged a delivery and was trapped leg-before trying to pull a good-length ball.
India’s dominance with both bat and ball proved too much for the West Indies. With Jadeja’s four wickets wrapping up the visitors’ second innings quickly, India secured a massive win and a strong start to the series.
