India defeated Bangladesh by 280 runs in the first test on Sunday, led by Ravichandran Ashwin, who claimed his 37th five-wicket haul. Bangladesh was bowled out for 234 runs in their second innings while chasing an unlikely 515 to win, with Ashwin taking 6-88. On the morning of the fourth day, the spin pair condemned the Tigers to an early defeat with a combined score of 3-58.

With a strike rate of above 45 and an average of 19.4, R Ashwin has taken 96 wickets in 35 innings during the fourth Test innings, his best bowling stats being 7/59. In the test match, he has claimed six five-wicket hauls during the fourth innings. With this, he has surpassed Anil Kumble’s record, who finished with a total of 94 fourth innings wickets.
Ashwin has tied with West Indies legend Courtney Walsh to become eighth-highest wicket-taker in Tests. He has taken 519 wickets at an average of 23.78 in 101 Tests, including 36 five-wicket hauls and his best statistics of 7/59. Walsh has also amassed 519 wickets in 132 Test matches from 1984 to 2001.
Ashwin had an impact in the last innings while defending a substantial score of 515 runs, having gone wicketless in the opening innings. By the end of the third day of play, Ashwin had claimed three wickets at an economy rate of 4.20 for 63 runs in 15 overs.
The second and final test will begin in Kanpur on Friday.
