Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union Cabinet on Tuesday gave the green light to the National Sports Policy. The policy is expected to act as a strategic framework for strengthening sports infrastructure and improving athletic performance across the country. “The new policy supersedes the existing National Sports Policy, 2001, and lays out a visionary and strategic roadmap to establish India as a global sporting powerhouse and a strong contender for excellence at international sporting events, including the 2036 Olympic Games,” the government said.

After the policy was greenlit, Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandviya posted on X, “This landmark policy outlines a strategic roadmap to promote sports culture at the grassroots, enhance infrastructure, support athlete development, and establish India as a formidable force in global sports.”

The Cabinet also approved several major proposals focused on advancing research and employment. Among the key decisions was the approval of a Rs 1 lakh crore fund dedicated to promoting research, development and innovation in sunrise sectors. The fund aims to accelerate technological advancement and enhance manufacturing capabilities in emerging industries.

During the announcement presentation, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw gave details on the approved Employment Linked Incentive Scheme and said, “The focus of Employment Linked Incentive Scheme will be on the manufacturing sector. It has two parts; part one is for first timers and part two for support to sustained employment…”
